The Project

Create a Brand identity for a new brewing bompany in Gresham, Oregon that reflected the owner’s cutting edge style while staying true to the “old town” location.

Wright Side Up Design was brought in very early in the creation of 4th Street brewing. The building was under construction and the over all feel of the business had not been developed. With the creation of the logo, we were able to assist the owners of 4th Street with a visual of their idea. They now had a look, a style & a color palette to move forward with.

Above is the new building signage. In such a short time it has become an iconic symbol from the streets of Gresham, Oregon. In the daytime, the image pops against the building and sky. While in the evening. the glow of lights around the outer edge creates is a very warm invitation to join the party.

Being given free reign on the creation of this brand mark allowed Wright Side Up Design to present the owners with many different directions. From using the actual shape of the building to a four-piece element, we finally decided to use the number 4 in a bold & modern way. The number 4 represented the business name as well as the location of the business. It was a decision that established 4th Street Brewing Company as a successful business and made it easy to locate, even without the address.

Once we had the brand mark down, the rest of the branding package was developed. From the menus, signage, growlers, coaster, glassware, kegs and all the souvenir products, including hats, t-shirts and sweatshirts the image of 4th Street Brewing is strong and long lasting. The decision was made to remove the color in the logo on the glassware to showcase the beautiful rich colors produced by 4th Street’s brew master.

The color of beer is very important to those who produce it as well as those who consume it. 4th Street Brewing Company’s color palette was chosen for this reason. The colors needed to be current and complement the coloring in the brew. A warm gray was chosen as a neutral backdrop as to not distract from the burnt orange color that was chosen to represent the brew. In addition, the 4th street icon pops from the neutral gray. Below is a perfect example of how the colors compliment one another.

The Result

In the end, Wright Side Up Design was able to create an iconic symbol that will stand the test of time and be a marker for the Historic Downtown Gresham area. We are proud of the work we did. By listening to our clients, we were able to allow them to grow their dream. The image above shows how much Wright Side Up Design’s work the owners of 4th Street Brewing Company appreciate. The first thing you see as you enter their establishment is our work.

The Project

Wright Side Up Design was challenged to combine Lotus Skateboards with Foil Studios, a woodworking studio specializing in creating furniture, objects, interiors & lighting. The key elements connected to each company, were the lotus flower from Lotus Skateboards and the signature inlaid line from Foil Studios.

Combining both created Lotus Balance, a sustainable and environmentally conscious company directed at developing products to help individuals maintain balance and build their core strength. From athletes to those needing to rehabilitate from injury.

Being environmentally friendly and located in the Pacific Northwest, Lotus Balance needed to reflect the beauty of nature, yet establish them as one with the advancement of technology.

Above you will see how Wright Side Up Design was able to combine both elements into a brand mark that was a natural fit, literally! We used the signature inlay from Foil Studios as the stem of the lotus flower. The palette selection represents both the color of nature as well as the precision of science.

The typeface selection played several rolls in the final outcome of the brand mark. The rounded shape allowed for our palette selection to be bold. It softened the gray color and also replicated Foil Studios inlay line.

One of the products that Lotus Balance produces is a balance board. It is a beautiful product that is made from bamboo, a completely sustainable product. When it came time to brand this product, the decision was made to keep its beauty. The brand mark was produced out of a recycled aluminum and inlayed into the bamboo board. The result was a perfect marriage between nature and technology.

Wright Side Up Design was also asked to create complimentary pieces that supported the balance board product and brand mark. From instructional and sales sheets to order forms, we were able to maintain the look and feel by creating pieces that were both simple and fresh. The owners of Lotus Balance even allowed us to incorporate Wright Side Up Designs “man” into their instructional sheet. The “man” walks users step by step through the proper way to use the boards. We are honored to be part of Lotus Balance.

In addition to the marketing pieces, Wright Side Up Design was also challenged with packaging the Lotus Balance boards. The owners wished to have a package that reflected their product. A recycled cardboard box was chosen and in the end, only two labels appear on the box. One of which is the brand mark and the other is a contents label that is universal for all the products in the board line.

The Result

Wright Side Up Design was able to develop a look and feel for Lotus Balance that flowed with the direction their company was going, a company that loves nature and the people in it.

The Project

Wright Side Up Design was asked to help develop the brandmark as well as the name of a new Aveda® day spa. The name Désirant was chosen for it’s meaning; French for “wishing”. The overall goal was to be the spa that other spas wished to be.

When we sat down to work towards a color palette, we realized that we didn’t need to narrow it down. We decided to allow the seasons: winter, spring, summer and fall, to be reflected in the design of all branding pieces.

Désirant Day Spa and Salon offered services that flowed from one season to the next. The customers changing seasonal needs guided us to choose color selections in our marketing pieces that would evoke emotion appropriate to the season. It is the same principle as painting the inside of ones home. Your color choice is usually based on the time of year. Warm rich colors for the fall and winter, bright lighter colors for spring and summer.

Désirant Day Spa and Salon chose to have Wright Side Up Design create all their print advertising pieces in order to have a consistent look. Being a licensed Aveda® Salon, Désirant had access to generic ad campaigns through Aveda but chose to go away from the generic look. Wright Side Up Design was able to create marketing pieces that focused on the products and services Désirant offered while maintaining the integrity of the national brand- a custom look with a national product.

The Project

The Portland Timbers professional soccer team and Alaska Airlines teamed up to produce a new 737 soccer-themed aircraft. A design contest was introduced asking for entries that reflected what the Portland Timbers were all about. Over 500 entries from all over the country were submitted and Wright Side Up Design was chosen as the grand prize-winner.

The overall instructions and requirements allowed each designer to freely create what they felt. Incorporating the team’s logo was the only requirement. The images below will showcase each element of the plane and the reason for each design.

The tail section of the plane is where we chose to showcase the powerful brand mark of the Timbers. We designed the piece to extend past the actual plane section to give an even larger presence. We wanted the team icon to be the last image people see as the plane moves past them.

The body of the aircraft was designed after the team jersey. The graphics are very bold on the team jersey but if you look closely there are other subtle elements. I wanted to reflect the same feeling on the plane. The subtle soccer ball pattern is screened in the background. This detail does not reveal itself until after the plane approaches the terminal. The overall design consists of many layers and offers a new look each time it’s viewed.

The Result

An award winning a design that shows the passion that the city of Portland and the state of Oregon have for their professional MLS soccer team, The Portland Timbers. The design will represent this team for many years as Alaska Airlines flies from city to city. It is quite an accomplishment for Wright Side Up Design to have designed an Alaska Airlines 737. The problem is, how do we get it into our portfolio.
